A Dallas Independent School District (ISD) police officer was seriously injured in a shooting Thursday afternoon in the parking lot of a Sam’s Club in northwest Dallas, prompting a major law enforcement response and an active investigation.

The shooting occurred near the shopping center at Interstate 635 (LBJ Freeway) and Midway Road, close to both Sam’s Club and Walmart. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, where officers secured the area while investigators gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses.

Dallas ISD Police Chief Albert Martinez identified the injured officer as Officer Justin Jones, 39, who has served with the department for 16 years and is assigned to White High School. Officials said Jones sustained serious gunshot wounds and was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

According to investigators, Officer Jones was attempting to assist an individual reported to be in crisis near the LBJ Freeway after being flagged down. Authorities said he moved the individual to the nearby parking lot in an effort to remove the situation from the busy roadway before the shooting occurred.

A second Dallas ISD police officer arrived moments later and rendered immediate aid by applying a tourniquet before Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel reached the scene. Officials credited the rapid actions of fellow officers and first responders with providing critical lifesaving care.

The incident triggered a large police presence around the shopping center, with patrol units, detectives, and crime scene investigators taking control of the area as they processed evidence and reconstructed the events leading up to the shooting.

Authorities confirmed that a possible suspect was taken into custody following the incident. However, investigators have not released the suspect’s identity or disclosed what may have led to the confrontation. The investigation remains ongoing.

Customers inside nearby businesses described a tense scene as officers responded. Some shoppers were temporarily asked to remain inside stores while law enforcement ensured there was no continuing threat to the public.

Community leaders and law enforcement officials have expressed support for Officer Jones, his family, and the Dallas ISD Police Department, highlighting the dangers officers face while responding to calls involving individuals in crisis.

The shooting also underscored the coordinated response between Dallas ISD Police, the Dallas Police Department, and other emergency agencies as they worked together to secure the scene and begin the investigation.

Authorities are expected to release additional information regarding the suspect, the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and Officer Jones’ condition as the investigation progresses.

The thoughts of the Dallas community remain with Officer Justin Jones, his family, colleagues, and everyone affected by this tragic incident as he continues his recovery.
